I need snare drum advice. you got any?
ok so i have a ludwig snare drum (accent cs series) and it has tonal problems. i cant that really nice pop/ring out of it that i need it. it sounds like a muted snare and i play metal so this is unacceptable ha ha!!! i need that nice pop with a long ring. start with basics for me (snare tension, head tension, etc.) i need it to sound like snare drum used in “cant let go” by “death of the cool” if you listen to the snare, it has a nice overtone. i need that. not that exact tone, but i need a good long ring. you get the idea. any ideas?
Often, when your snare drum doesn’t pop the way you describe, it’s more about the tension on the bottom head. It should be tightened 12 to 6 around the head evenly until you get the sound you want by tapping the bottom head. Very lightly as this is a thinner head and you are not going to thump on it. Just to test the sound.
Then, you follow the same procedure on your top head, evenly going around the head 12 to 6 until you get the pop you want. Of course, you are going to hit that the way you hit when you play.
If you have a choke on it, you are going to want to experiment with that as you go along. I found a choke to be too dead most of the time. And with the choke open, I often got a ring that bothered the crap out of me. I fixed this problem by putting tape on the top head until the ringing stopped. (Duct tape works best.)
Finally, you could have a problem with your strainer.
It’s important that your snares are flush with the bottom drum head. If they come in on any kind of angle, the strings or stap will choke the bottom head, and you are not going to get the resonance you are looking for.
Remember, tuning a drum without tuning it with the rest of the set doesnt work. It’s all how they sound together. The other thing is getting a sound out of your snare drum on your set is usually not going to be the same as any sound that is recorded professionally and EQ’d to death. It’s not realistic to think you can approximate the sound, even if you have the same drum in your possession. Worry about sounding good, not like someone else.
