Evan is painting a stool that has a cylindrical seat and four rectangular prism legs. The seat has a diameter of 8 inches and a height of 2 inches.
Each leg is 2 inches by 2 inches by 10 inches.
How much area will Evan have to paint? Use 3.14 for pi. Show your work

First off you want to find the surface area of the cylindrical seat. To find area of a cylinder the formula is (Surface Area = 2(pi r squared) + (2 pi r)* h
r is radius but they gave us the diameter so we divide the diameter in half to get radius.
r = 4
2(pi * 16) + (8 pi) * 2 = 48 pi or 150.72inch squared
Then calculate the surface area of the legs. The formula for that would be adding all the sides together Rectangular Prism = 2ab + 2bc + 2ac
we have 4 sides of the prism that are 2by10 inches long and 2 sides that are 2by2 inches
but remeber one
of the sides is attached to the top so not only do we not include a 2by2 on each prism we have to subtract it from the seat too.
so really all we have is 4 sides of each rectangle prism and 4 legs so 16 sides total
each of those is a 2×10 so thats 320inches squared
add up both the top and bottom and you get: 470.72 inches squared
