Why does my ride cymbal sound bad?
Ive got a Shalimar ride cymbal and id be playing anything like acdc or whatnot and it just sounds nothing like them. Im hitting it in the middle of the cymbal and it just really sounds like ringing
Not all ride cymbals are for all types of music. Some have more sustain and overtones than others and are better for softer music. Some cymbals are just not very good and don’t sound right no matter what musical situation you use them for. If the ringing and sustain override the sound of the of the next note, try a piece of tape on different parts of the cymbal to kill some of the sustain.
This will take a little trial and error until you find the right spot
and the size of the piece of tape. Or you may just have to get a different cymbal to get the sound you are looking for. When buying new cymbals, take your old ones and listen to how the one you are thinking about buying and the old ones contrast and compliment each other.
