do lally columns need to be set below grade of the floor, or can they be mounted in the same manner as the current jack columns, sitting upon the concrete
pillar pad and mounted to the joist with mounting plate…I had a home inspector come in and he said one of my wooden beams is sagging, but it is nothing to be concerned about..but I would like to place another column underneath this beam…
this depends on the condition in your basement. I will assume that frost is not a problem.
Your new support will need support under it. the floor slab is not designed to take the weight. You have to cut out the floor and dig down 12 inches from top of floor. then fill with concrete. I recomend a footing 2 foot by 2 foot by 1 foot thick or bigger depending on the weight to be supported. When they poor a new floor they dig 6 inchs deeper under the columns and fill it whith concrete when they poor the floor giving you a 12 inch thick footing. this is called a slab thickening. ps the footing must sit on native or compacted ground so do not put dirt back in if you take to much out.
