Is it possible (and how) to make your own pane of glass from sand and a hot fire?
Well I have seen fires hot enough to melt glass bottles into little globs of glass, so I guess it is possible technically.
However starting from scratch with sand your chances are very slim. It takes a very fine sand that has all the impurities filtered out of it and a very hot fire and something to hold the sand while it is melting. When glass was first being made they would place an iron pot full of sand in a very hot furnace and when the sand had melted they would take it out and pour it on something flat. Later on glass blowers would place a pile of sand in a furnace and melt it and take it out and bow a large glass bubble and then place it on something flat and cut the bubble so it would relax into flat pains of glass.
