How can I specify this drum style?
Writing a drum part, I want to specify a folk-jazz style, including the use of rim clicks. I’m not trying to notate it exactly – just that style. What should I write on the drum part? Right now I have “folk-jazz style, straight 8ths, include rim clicks”. Any general guidelines on specifying a drum style?
Are you creating a new style, is that what you’re saying?
If you’re integrating jazz with folk music, then just name as you named it:
“Jazz-Folk” Style
In a biographical sense, you could add what’s included”:
“Using Straight 8th notes and includes use of the Cáscara ["shell"] of drum to include the drum rims as well.
An integration of (whatever style of) Jazz with (whatever style of) Folk music.
Inspired by (list the styles of jazz and folk music you are inspired by to make up this new style and how it brings about a new feeling of _____________ whatever feeling it brings you.
This is where you can fill up a lot of space with your studies on your new style.

“Cáscara” actually means “shell” in Spanish and is used in Salsa music. There is also a rhythm to go in and out of with it.
In Salsa music, the ever-famous “Abanique” is used as well.
(Abanique means “It fans” in Spanish because the sound reminds you of opening a big fan really quick) – the sound is:
“BAH! Brrrrrrrrrrrr BAH!
(Brrrr = either very fast roll, or using the right pressure on the timbale stick with one hand (which I usually did) which is usually played at the beginning of salsa tunes on the Timbales ON the rim and drum, (So it’s “RIM/DRUM(same time!, roooolll RIM/DRUM!) then intermittently throughout the music. The “Brrrrrr” sound would be like that of you rolling your tongue really fast.
If you don’t feel comfortable with the word “Cáscara, then “playing the rims” sounds much better than “rim clicks”, and if you’re also playing the shell, I would add “by playing the rims and shell of the drum (you can clarify which drum here).
So every folk-jazz song will only be in 8th notes? Will there be any riffing or going in and out of the rhythm?
