How much does an average percussion practice pad (drum pad) cost?
I’m learning my rudiments as a starting new and I need to practice on something other than my lap and the floor, or hard surfaces that make a whole bunch of noise when you hit them with snare sticks. All of the local music stores don’t carry them and I’m not going to drive for an hour to figure out how much one costs. I want to know ahead of time so I can figure out if I have the money for it anyway.
The price of a pad really depends on what you want to get.
Practice pads come in a variety of sizes (usually ranging from about 6″ to 12″). While a 6″ pad is better for developing accuracy (and often mountable on a cymbal stand), the 12″ may more closely resemble the actual size of a drum.
Practice pads may also be made out of different materials. Plastic drum pads are significantly cheaper than gum-rubber pads, but the gum pads have what is marketed as a “Reel-Feel”. They will cause the sticks to bounce back much more naturally than the plastic pads will.
The gum-rubber pads are usually between $25-$45 (depending on what size you get, who manufactures it, and who you buy it from). My recommendation is, if you are not completely strapped for cash, to go with the gum-rubber. They are more durable, quieter, and feel better to play on. HQ is probably the best known for making practice pads, but other companies like Vic Firth I’m sure will do just as well for you. As for size, that’s up to you. I have both.
Forgot to mention, plastic ones you can get for like $10 for a 6″
